Looking at Humour

I needed to know more about my subject matter to really put across my intentions when I create my own documentary. I want to discuss the differences in humour between my models and gain a varied response to the comedy related questions I will be asking. Here above I found this talk by Peter McGraw which highlights the way in which we view scenarios that may be potentially funny or not, depending on our sense of humour. He gets us to think about why we laugh at certain situations that may not appear at first to be amusing. With a psychological approach, he has shown me the beginning of an understanding about the need for comedy in our lives.

Like my own background research, this documentary on comedy goes through the way in which comedy has grown and developed over the years with mention to particular types of humour. This was highly influential to watch because I not only learnt about how it has evolved but also how someone has managed to create documentary that presents such a subject. In truth, I was finding it difficult to find such work in order to learn and gain inspiration. However, this has helped me establish some important points regarding my own work. Despite the interest of this documentary,  I now know that I want to interview people about the medium in a participatory way rather than in this performative/reflexive way. As a cameraman, I do not want to be apart of the film. Many already know I have a dry sense of humour, taking influence from Comedian Jack Dee and Eddie Izzard.

As a result, I think its best if I caught interviews without my involvement. Whilst looking into comedy, I also found these interesting websites that gave me extra knowledge about how humour works and the psychology behind it.
